21 Years, No Justice: Dr. Asha Goel’s family urges Maharashtra CM to intervene

Despite DNA evidence and a confession, legal delays deny closure to a grieving family

Mumbai, March 17, 2025 (TGN):  Today, at the Press Club of Mumbai, a press conference was held to highlight the unresolved murder case of Dr. Asha Goel, a distinguished obstetrician and gynecologist who was brutally killed on August 22, 2003, while visiting Mumbai. Her daughter, Rashmi Goel, has written an urgent letter to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Devendra Fadnavis, seeking his intervention to the long-delayed trial.

For 21 years, the Goel family has fought for justice, but despite compelling evidence—including DNA matches, forensic reports, and even a confession—the case remains unresolved. The delay has caused immense anguish, raising serious concerns about the efficiency of the justice system. Rashmi Goel, a professor of Criminal Law at the University of Denver, has urged authorities to take immediate action, emphasizing that the lack of progress in the case is deeply troubling.

We have waited far too long, and our patience has worn thin. My mother dedicated her life to healing others, yet justice for her brutal murder remains out of reach. We urge the Chief Minister to step in and ensure that this case finally moves forward. India cannot afford to be seen as a nation where even the strongest evidence fails to convict murderers,” said Rashmi Goel at the press conference.

Dr. Asha Goel was a highly respected medical professional who dedicated her life to women’s healthcare. Born in Mathura in 1940, she pursued her medical education in Mumbai before moving to Canada, where she became a leading figure in obstetrics and gynecology. Her murder shocked both India and Canada, yet her killers remain unpunished.

The press conference underscored that this prolonged legal delay is not just a personal tragedy for the Goel family but also a critical issue for India’s justice system. The family remains determined to pursue every possible avenue until justice is served.
