Isha Gramotsavam Makes Grand Debut in Maharashtra; Hundreds of Rural Athletes Participate in Nashik Cluster Matches
1 August, Nashik ( TGN ): Isha Gramotsavam, Bharat’s biggest rural sports festival, marked its successful debut in Maharashtra as hundreds of rural athletes from villages across Nashik district came together to celebrate the spirit of sports, community and rural life. The inaugural cluster-level tournament held at Late Ma Saheb Meenatai Thackeray Stadium, began with ceremonial lamp lighting by dignitaries followed by intense sports matches and cultural performances.
The event was graced by Shri Girish Mahajan, Hon’ble Minister of Water Resources, Government of Maharashtra and Guardian Minister of Nashik, as chief guest.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from 36 teams comprising men’s volleyball and women’s throwball teams, with more than 360 players representing villages from across the Nashik district.
The women’s throwball competition got underway with four exciting first-round encounters, featuring Samarth from Talegaon against Ishu Warrior from Kundewadi village, Airline Wing from Lakhmapur against Rising Star from Kherwadi, Verangana Vikings of Karambhel Kanashi against Tejaswini Thunders from Karambhel Hatgad, and Ozarkhed Team from Ozarkhed villageagainst Throwball Warrior from Raulas.
Following a series of spirited contests, Ishu Warrior, Airline Wing, Tejaswini, and Throwball Warrior Raulas advanced to the semi-finals. Airline Wing (Lakhmapur) overcame Ishu Warrior (Kundewadi) in the first semi-final to secure a place in the championship clash, while Throwball Warrior (Raulas) defeated Tejaswini Thunders (Karambhel Hatgad) in the second semi-final tobook the remaining spot in the final.
The championship match lived up to expectations, with Airline Wing (Lakhmapur) and Throwball Warrior (Raulas) engaging in a thrilling contest marked by long rallies, remarkable teamwork and determined performances. At the end of an absorbing final, Throwball Warrior (Raulas) emerged victorious to be crowned the Nashik Cluster Throwball Champions of Isha Gramotsavam, while Tejaswini Thunders (Karambhel Hatgad) finished as the runners-up. Ishu Warrior (Raulas) secured the third position, while Tejaswini Thunders (Karambhel Hatgad)finished fourth.
Many of the women who participated from surrounding villages of Nashik, saw a sports courtand a stadium for the first time, let alone play.
Meanwhile, the men’s volleyball competition is still underway, with the semi-finals and final scheduled later this evening. The Nashik Cluster volleyball champions will be announced at the end of the day.
The Cluster Champions in both men’s volleyball and women’s throwball will be awarded ₹10,000 each, while the runners-up received ₹7,000. The third and fourth-placed teams were awarded ₹5,000 and ₹3,000, respectively.
The Cluster Champions will now progress to the Divisional Round, scheduled to be held on 15–16 August at Sadhguru Sannidhi, Bengaluru. The divisional champions will receive cash prizes of ₹15,000, while the runners-up, third and fourth-placed teams will receive ₹10,000, ₹6,000, and ₹4,000, respectively.
The Divisional Champions will then advance to the National Grand Finale, to be held from 4–6 September in front of the iconic Adiyogi at the Isha Yoga Center, Coimbatore. The national champions in both men’s volleyball and women’s throwball will each receive ₹5 lakh, while the runners-up will be awarded ₹3 lakh. The third and fourth-placed teams will receive ₹1 lakh and ₹50,000, respectively.
To further encourage women’s participation in rural sports, the Best Women’s Throwball Player from Maharashtra in the Divisional Round will also stand a chance to win a Gravton electric bike worth over ₹1.2 lakh.
Isha Gramotsavam was launched in 2004 by Sadhguru – Yogi, Spiritual Guru and Founder of Isha Foundation – with the vision to rekindle the vibrant spirit of rural Bharat by bringing villages together through sports and culture. Unlike professional sporting tournaments, Gramotsavam is exclusively meant for rural citizens—from farmers, fishermen and daily wage earners to students and homemakers—providing them an opportunity to represent their villages, strengthen community bonds and celebrate rural life through healthy competition.
The 18th edition of Isha Gramotsavam is bringing together over 80,000 participants from more than 40,000 villages across 10 states and one Union Territory. Accredited by FIT India, this year’s tournament features more than 7,000 teams, including an estimated 15,000 women participants. Organised by Isha Outreach under its Action for Rural Rejuvenation initiative, the tournament is being conducted across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, AndhraPradesh, Odisha, Maharashtra, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and the Union Territory of Puducherry.
Over the years, Isha Gramotsavam has earned national recognition for its contribution tograssroots sports and rural development. The initiative is recognised by the Ministry of Youth.
Affairs and Sports, Government of India, as a National Sports Promotion Organization (NSPO). In 2018, it received the prestigious Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar for its outstanding contribution to sports promotion in rural India.
