Mumbai’s First Made in India TEER Procedure Performed by Dr. Ankur Phatarpekar

Meril Strengthens Its Position as a Leader in India’s Advancing MedTech Landscape

Mumbai, Maharashtra 26 th November 2025 ( TGN )— A 44-year-old male patient suffering from a severe heart condition, marked by extreme breathlessness, swollen feet, and an inability to carry out daily activities, has experienced a significant turnaround after undergoing Mumbai’s first Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair (TEER) procedure. This minimally invasive cardiac therapy provides a vital alternative for patients who are too high-risk for open-heart surgery and is redefining treatment pathways for mitral valve disease in India.

Patient Background

The patient had been diagnosed with severe mitral regurgitation (MR), a condition in which the heart’s mitral valve does not close properly, causing blood to leak backward into the upper chamber. His symptoms had progressed to the point where routine activities such as walking short distances or climbing stairs had become highly restrictive.

Traditional treatments like open-heart surgery or heart transplant were not suitable because of his compromised heart function and associated risks. TEER—an advanced catheter-based therapy—was recommended as the safest and most effective option.

A Milestone in Advanced Cardiac Care

TEER offers a non-surgical solution for valve repair through a minimally invasive approach, significantly reducing procedural risks and shortening recovery time. The successful procedure was performed by Dr. Ankur Phatarpekar, Chief Cardiologist, HVS Symbiosis Hospital, along with other participants Dr Meghav Shah, Structural Interventional Cardiologist & Dr Gourish Shinde, HVS Symbiosis Hospital, Dadar, Mumbai marking a major advancement in the availability of high-end cardiac care in the city.

Successful Patient Outcome

Post-procedure, the patient showed substantial improvement. His breathlessness decreased, his mobility improved, and he is now able to resume daily activities—reflecting the effectiveness and patient-friendly nature of TEER therapy.

Expert Commentary

Sharing his insights, Dr. Ankur Phatarpekar said: “TEER therapy is a crucial option for patients who cannot undergo open-heart surgery due to comorbidities or advanced heart failure. Severe mitral regurgitation, if left untreated, significantly increases mortality. TEER allows us to offer a safe, effective, and minimally invasive solution with markedly reduced risks. Introducing this therapy in Mumbai empowers us to treat high-risk patients who earlier had very limited options.”
