Critical care unit with reputed clinicians and infrastructure to meet the needs for advanced liver disease care in Navi Mumbai
Navi Mumbai, January 10, 2025 (TGN): Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai(AHNM) opens a new 12-bedded Liver Intensive Care Unit (ICU) which will provide comprehensive care for liver diseases including acute liver failure, chronic disease management and transplant recovery. This 1st of its kind facility in the Navi Mumbai region will make Apollo Hospitals the leading choice for liver disease care.
Liver disease is a major health challenge in India, accounting for 18.3% of the 2 million global liver disease–related deaths in 2015. Chronic liver disease (CLD) arises from alcohol use, viral hepatitis (HBV and HCV), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and genetic disorders. India has over 40 million hepatitis B-infected individuals, with nearly 600,000 deaths annually. Chronic hepatitis C contributes up to 32% of liver cancer and 20% of cirrhosis cases, while most affected individuals remain unaware of their infection. Hepatitis E virus (HEV) causes 10-40% of acute hepatitis and has a high mortality rate in pregnant women. NAFLD affects 9% to 32% of the population and is a leading cause of liver-related deaths.
Acute liver failure (ALF), driven by viral infections and drug toxicity, is commonly linked to hepatitis E in adults (23-56.5%) and hepatitis A in children (10-71%).
With 2 lakh new cases of end-stage liver disease and 25,000 transplants needed annually, India’s growing liver disease burden underscores the need for early detection and better access to advanced care.
Dr Amey Sonavane, Consultant Gastroenterology & Hepatology, Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai said,” Liver disease is a major health challenge in India, with 1 out of 5 adults showing symptoms of liver disorders. Factors like poor diet, excessive alcohol consumption, sedentary lifestyle, viral infections & some genetic causes lead to various health issues including fatty liver disease, hepatitis & cirrhosis. It is estimated that the demand for specialised care for liver disease will only increase”
Dr. Guruprasad Shetty, Lead – HPB and Liver Transplantation Surgery, Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai said, “The increasing burden of liver disease in India necessitates specialized care and the launch of our dedicated Liver ICU is a crucial step in addressing this gap. Unlike dialysis for kidney failure, there are no machines that can replicate liver function when it fails, so the demand for advanced liver disease care will only increase in days to come. Our team of specialists is trained to provide care to these patients. Our centre also has a successful transplant program having performed more than 215 liver transplants with 90% success rates”
Dr. Akshay Challani, Lead & Sr Consultant Critical Care and Medical Advisor, Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai stated,” Advanced liver diseases often lead to multiple organ dysfunction, impacting the kidneys, heart, lungs, and brain simultaneously, which makes their management extremely challenging. A multidisciplinary approach is essential to improve survival and prevent irreversible damage. Recognizing this, AHNM is launching a dedicated Liver ICU which will ensure a cohesive, multidisciplinary approach, reducing complications and providing timely interventions to improve survival rates and long-term outcomes for patients with advanced liver disease.”
