Jagat bhari aamhi Kolhapuri—once again, the humanity of Kolhapur is making its mark in Mumbai,” Kolhapur District President (Former Servicemen Friends Department) Salmanbhai carries forward a mission of humanity through Mumbai and Navi Mumbai
MUMBAI, Babita P M : In a city where millions depend on public and private transport for medical emergencies, the story of Salmanbhai Desai of Kolhapur stands out as an example of compassion and civic responsibility. During the difficult days of the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown, when patients struggled to reach hospitals and families faced unprecedented hardships, Desai stepped forward to help those in need.
A resident of Shiroli (P), Taluka Hatkanangale, Kolhapur district, Desai serves as Kolhapur District President, Former Servicemen Friends Department and is actively involved in social work across Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.
During the lockdown, Desai provided free transportation to patients travelling to hospitals and assisted people facing difficulties during quarantine. His assistance, according to information shared about his social work, was extended without discrimination based on caste, religion or social status. For people who had nowhere else to turn, his willingness to respond became a source of support during an exceptionally difficult period.
What makes his story particularly noteworthy is that his commitment to helping people has continued beyond the pandemic. Working as an Ola/Uber driver in Mumbai, Desai continues to offer free transportation to patients and hospital-going passengers whenever possible.
“Jagat bhari aamhi Kolhapuri—once again, the humanity of Kolhapur is making its mark in Mumbai,” he says, expressing his pride to NH in the tradition of Kolhapuri hospitality and humanity (Email:salmandesai910@gmail.com)
Desai’s journey demonstrates that social service does not always require a large organisation or substantial resources. Sometimes, a vehicle, a helping hand and the willingness to serve can make a significant difference in someone’s life.
From Kolhapur to Mumbai, Salmanbhai Desai has made humanity his common ground, helping people irrespective of their background and carrying forward a simple message—help those who need you.
