India at the UN: Stability in the Middle East Is Essential, Safety of 10 Million Indian Expatriates a Key Priority
16th October, New York ( TGN ) – During an open debate at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on the sensitive situation in the Middle East, India delivered a firm and clear national statement. Expressing deep concern over the ongoing tensions in the region, Ambassador P. Harish, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, made it clear that India has significant and direct interests in maintaining the security and stability of the entire region.
In a statement, India’s Permanent Mission to the UN in New York reported that Ambassador Harish emphasised that approximately 10 million Indian nationals currently reside in the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). As a result, any unrest or conflict in the Middle East directly affects the lives and livelihoods of expatriates.
Speaking at the international forum, India strongly called on all parties concerned to exercise utmost restraint, immediately de-escalate hostilities and tensions, and return to dialogue and diplomacy to achieve peaceful solutions to long-standing disputes.
In its diplomatic statement, India shared a broader vision, making it clear that “true peace does not simply mean the absence of war or shelling, but the creation of a secure environment where lasting stability prevails.” The Ambassador reiterated that “India is fully committed to building a safe, stable and prosperous Middle East.” India’s position clearly demonstrates that it considers the Middle East a region of critical importance, not only for the safety of its citizens but also for its broader global economic and trade interests.
The Government of India has consistently remained committed to protecting the interests and well-being of its citizens living in the Gulf and the wider Middle East. Special evacuation operations conducted during periods of crisis, such as Operation Ajay, along with round-the-clock helplines maintained by Indian embassies, reflect the government’s commitment to the welfare of its citizens. Raising the issue of the safety of 10 million Indians at the United Nations Security Council makes it clear that the protection and well-being of Indian citizens remain paramount in the country’s foreign policy.
